Fireworks and bonfires

All fireworks are dangerous. Many can be lethal.
If your family is planning a display for yourselves and friends, remind adults to follow the rules.
- Always keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take them out one at a time
- Always follow the instructions on each firework. Read the instructions by torch light - never using a match or naked flame
- Always light fireworks at arm's length, using a safety firework lighter or a taper
- Always stand back after lighting
- Always keep a bucket of water handy
- Always keep pets indoors
- Always supervise children around fireworks
- Never go back to a firework once lit - it may go off in your face
- Never put fireworks in your pocket
- Never throw fireworks
- Never give sparklers to children under five
- Never light more than one sparkler at a time and always wear gloves

Bonfires
- Bonfires should always be at least 18 metres away from houses, garages, sheds, fences, over head cables, trees, shrubs and hedges and always away from fireworks
- Everyone should keep away from the fire, especially young children who must be supervised at all times
- Adults should never use flammable liquids, such as paraffin or petrol, to light the fire and should never burn foam-filled furniture, aerosols, tins of paint or bottles
