fireworks and bonfires
Organising a safe and enjoyable bonfire or fireworks display is hard work.

All fireworks are dangerous. Many can be lethal.

If your family is planning a display for yourselves and friends, remind adults to follow the rules.

  • Always keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take them out one at a time.
  • Always follow the instructions on each firework.  Read the instructions by torch light - never using a match or naked flame.
  • Always light fireworks at arm's length, using a safety firework lighter or a taper.
  • Always stand back after lighting.
  • Always keep a bucket of water handy.
  • Always keep pets indoors.
  • Always supervise children around fireworks.
  • Never go back to a firework once lit - it may go off in your face.
  • Never put fireworks in your pocket.
  • Never throw fireworks.
  • Never give sparklers to children under five.
  • Never light more than one sparkler at a time and always wear
    gloves.
Bonfires are dangerous and can be seen as anti-social behaviour.

Bonfires

  • Bonfires should always be at least 18 metres away from houses, garages, sheds, fences, over head cables, trees, shrubs and hedges and always away from fireworks.
  • Everyone should keep away from the fire, especially young children who must be supervised at all times.
  • Adults should never use flammable liquids, such as paraffin or petrol, to light the fire and should never burn foam-filled furniture, aerosols, tins of paint or bottles.
