The most common cause of death among young people in the UK is road traffic accidents.
Every year over 20,000 people are killed or injured in cycling accidents alone.

Before you get on your bike, follow these few simple safety tips:

  • Always use a cycle helmet and make sure it fits you securely.
  • Before you set off, make sure your lights work - both at the front and at the back.
  • Make sure your bike is in good condition and that the brakes work.
  • Make sure other road users can see you - wear reflective clothing or stripes on your clothes BE SAFE, BE SEEN
Did you know it's an offence to cycle after dark without a white front light, and a red back light and a red reflector at the rear? Make sure they are all clean and in good working order.

You should always be aware of all traffic and pay extra attention at road junctions. It is always a good idea to take a cycle safety awareness course. Ask at your school or your local road safety office for more information. Where possible, use a cycle lane rather than the road. You can obtain a cycle route leaflet from your library or from your council's road safety office.
